*This episode was recorded prior to Iran’s recent announcement (March 2026) that it would not be participating in the FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States due to the U.S./Israel war in Iran.
Back in late 2025, a FIFA World Cup match was announced for June 26 in Seattle between Egypt and Iran. Even before the official match draw, Seattle PrideFest had planned to celebrate Pride Month by highlighting the global nature of the tournament and uplifting the LGBTQIA+ community during one of the city’s World Cup matches. The announcement of the Egypt–Iran match quickly sparked conversation across the world. For some, the moment represented an opportunity to bring visibility to LGBTQIA+ communities within global sports and international dialogue. For others, it raised complex questions about culture, politics, and representation—particularly among members of Middle Eastern and diaspora communities. In this episode, we explore the reactions that followed, the broader context of hosting a global sporting event during Pride Month, and the conversations that emerged at the intersection of sports, identity, politics, and community.
